Suspected Drunken Driver Ends Up In Crash Scene After Bypassing Roadblock In Mansfield: State Police

MANSFIELD, CT — A man who was later determined to be intoxicated tried to drive around a roadblock at an accident scene in Mansfield and wound up in the crash site itself, state police said.

At 12:59 a.m. Sunday, state police were dispatched to Storrs Road near Dog lane for a crash that prompted both the northbound and southbound lanes to be closed, according to an arrest report.

A Mansfield fire truck was parked across the road to block traffic, state police said.

Suddenly, a vehicle being driven by a 23-year-old Andover, MA, man appeared, according to an arrest report. Rather than taking the detour onto Dog Lane, the driver instead maneuvered around the fire truck, partially using the sidewalk, and wound up in the middle of the crash site, according to an arrest report.

The car was stopped by UConn police, who were assisting state police at the crash site.

The driver then was determined to be drunk and arrested for driving under the influence, state police said in a report.

He was also charged with failure to drive in the proper lane, according to an arrest report.
