William 'Bill' Newsome, 88; World War II Veteran; Storrs Resident Who Retired from CL and P

William β€˜Bill’ Newsome, 88, of Storrs, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 19, 2015.

One of 6 children, Bill was born on July 2, 1927 to the late John and Lillian (Rankin) Newsome in Providence, RI.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II as an Electricians’ Mate Third Class aboard the USS Tortuga. Bill retired after 31 years from CL&P (Willimantic and Mystic stations). Bill loved watching the N.Y. Yankees and enjoyed his summers at the lake cabin.

Bill was a devoted and loving husband for over 65 years to his wife, Wanda M. (Homiski) Newsome, who survives him. He is also survived by his 4 daughters Shirley Dazy (Mike) Surette of Willimantic, Nancy Bessette of Preston, Cindy (Don) Hartley of Stonington, and Lisa (Jeff) Ward of Storrs, his 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, many friends, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his siblings, Florence β€œFlo”, Mary β€œMae”, Lillian β€œDill”, Helen, and John, and his only son, William β€œBilly” Newsome (in 2011).

Calling hours will be Saturday, July 25 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic, CT. Private burial with military honors will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Windham at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VFW Post #3263, 60 Stonington Road, Mystic, CT 06355.
