Just bought a 5 month old Beagle on Saturday. I walked past him and he was the only one barking and lively when I walked past his cage. I decided to give him some attention and asked to play with him the pen...Fell in love immediately. I came back three hours later and bought him. I have no personal gripes with the store and if it is that bad as people noted in there, I think I made a great rescue by getting him out of there. One thing I did notice however, is that he does have a bit of kennel cough which he was medicated for and has had both shots for it already. Other than that he is a lively pup and very well tempered (typical beagle behavior). He has no signs of distrust in humans and is surprisingly good about letting me know he has to go out for potty (sits at door). People have to remember, this is a retail store. Two of the people that helped me were highschool students. They are not veterinarians. They have people in and out of the store all the time and need to help the customers, these animals aren't going to have 100% attention all day, the workers can only do so much and like I said, are not veterinarians. They have the vet come in every Wednesday to evaluate and treat the animals.
These animals are still so young, even mine. Any behavioral problems you might think they have can often be mended over time with some good TLC. The REAL worry and unknown are any hereditary problems seeing as you don't know the bloodlines history...But that said, is that really why you buy/don't buy a pet? Unless you plan to breed you are buying a pet for the love you can give it and the love it can give you.
