Board of Ed Scheduled to Tackle Dress Code Policy Tuesday Night

Meriden's school board is slated to discuss a change for city schools among other items at its public meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education building. 

The new policy with proposed amendments is here. The addition to the previous policy would forbid students from wearing clothing that reveals "private body areas" and undergarments.

the change has primarily been recommended to battle a trend of girls wearing tights as pants with short shirts. They say it would not be a flat-out ban on leggings or jeggings or skinny jeans, as many in the community believe.

One teacher, Platt High School social studies teacher and teacher’s union representative Geoff Kenyon, said at the board's last meeting that the policy and the widespread media attention surrounding it has led to “an unhealthy atmosphere, an ‘us versus them’ mentality.”
