Car Runs Into Bee Street Home

Firefighters were working to stabilize a house at the corner of Bee Street and Round Hill Road in Meriden Sunday night after a car ran through the home's back fence and ended up on its side and partially through a child's bedroom.

The family who lives at 3 Round Hill Road wasn't home just after 6 p.m. Sunday, when a Meriden man in his sixties heading north on Bee Street drove his car through a high wooden privacy fence, hit a swingset causing the auto to flip over – possibly twice – and eventually land on a wall at the back of the home, according to Meriden Police Acting Lt. Jeffrey Herget. 

The man, who police have declined to name, was extracted from the car by firefighters who had to take the top of the auto off, because they couldn't get him out of the doors, police said. The driver was taken to Harford Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured in the accident. 

Police said the driver told them he had swerved to miss an animal in the road, according to Herget.

"He said he was avoiding an animal, swerved to the left...(and) lost control of the vehicle," Herget said.

Herget said officers are investigating the crash, and believe the driver may have been speeding. They do not believe there was any alcohol or other substance involved, nor was the man in any medical emergency like diabetic shock.

The family who lived at the home had been away for the weekend, Herget said, and arrived home about ten minutes after the crash.

The crash caused "significant damage to the rear of the house," Herget said, mostly affecting an addition that was used for what appeared to be a child's bedroom.

Neighbors crowded around the home to watch firefighters and police work on the scene.

Carlos Glooza, who lives on Bee Street accross from the home said he came out of his house after hearing a "loud boom." He and other neighbors said it was common to see drivers speed on their street.
