Cats Surrendered By Homeless Family Now Available For Adoption In Meriden

A man who said he was living out of his car with 20 cats, family members and a dog, brought the cats to the animal shelter earlier this week

MERIDEN, CT — The 20 cats that were surrendered to the Meriden Humane Society by a homeless family this week are now available for adoption, officials announced on Friday afternoon.

The cats were surrendered earlier this week by a man who said he recently became homeless in Bristol and was living out of his car with 20 cats, his father, his aunt and a dog, according to NBC Connecticut. Humane Society officials told NBC Connecticut that it was a heartbreaking situation for the family and they weren’t just dumping the cats. “We are now accepting adoption applications for these 20 babies who are mostly middle aged (5-10),” the Meriden Humane Society said in a post on Facebook. “Some came with some health issues - eye, ear, respiratory infections - and are receiving treatment. Spays and neuters are scheduled and we will do foster to adopt agreements for families who want to take animals home as they await their 'fixin'. Kitties are a little nervous in our shelter and can be found hiding behind the door in their room. However when you go in to have a chat with them, they come out to greet you with offers of head bumps and leg rubs.”
