Embattled Meriden Councilman Defended By Supporters

A city councilman accused of assaulting judicial marshals during a protest appeared at Meriden Superior Court with supporters.

MERIDEN, CT - Councilman Angel Castro appeared at Meriden Superior Court Thursday along with a large group of his supporters, the Hartford Courant reported. Castro was arrested during a recent protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

However, his supporters denied the charges and said that he committed no crime. State Rep. Geraldo Reyes, D-Waterbury said that Castro is a long-time supporter of the immigrant community and "an upstanding citizen," according to the Courant.

Castro was arrested Dec. 13 on charges that he allegedly assaulted two judicial marshals in the course of a protest. Police charged Angel Castro, 49, with assault on a public safety officer and first-degree rioting.

Police said that two judicial marshals were attempting to move a crowd of 15-20 people who were protesting at Meriden Superior Court. Castro physically assaulted the two judicial marshals while they were attempting to disperse the crowd, according to police.
