Fire That Hurt 3 Meriden Firefighters Started Unintentionally: Fire Marshal

A city dispatcher was given a suspension due to a communication error.

The Meriden Fire Marshal’s Office concluded that a fire in September that injured three firefighters was started unintentionally by a mentally-disabled man.

The Record-Journal reports that the fire at 504 E. Main St. was started after the man lit a butane torch in a bedroom. An insurance investigator came to the same conclusion.

Firefighters were delayed due to communication error. A city dispatcher was given a two-day unpaid suspension. An arbitration panel will take up a grievance filed by the union.
