GROTON, CT — The Town of Groton Police Department Marine Unit continues to conduct weekly maritime patrols during the Summer months.

With the high number of recreational boaters in the area, coupled with the seasonal influx of visitors who want to take advantage of all the great things that Groton and surrounding communities have to offer, the GTPD Marine Unit will maintain a visible presence along our coastline, conducting navigational safety inspections and enforcing reckless operation and BUI (Boating Under the Influence) laws from the Thames to the Mystic Rivers. We want to remind the public to obey the law and always exercise caution while in or near the water so that everyone can safely enjoy our coastline.

On a related note, recent torrential rains that occurred to our north may lead to additional debris in local waterways especially around the mouth of local rivers. As a caution to boaters, please be alert to debris such as trees and branches, small portions of dislodged dock and others items that may have drifted south as a result of last week’s storms. This debris that has flowed into Long Island Sound can remain on the surface or partially submerged, creating an extremely dangerous navigational hazard to mariners.

As always, keep your cell phone fully charged and monitor your marine band radio to report any water emergencies. Boaters can also check Channel 16 where Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound broadcasts Security Mariner Information Alerts every 30 minutes.
