Historic Store Closes After Fire In Meriden

The family-owned business, which was established in 1905, will be temporarily closed after being significantly damaged in the fire.

MERIDEN, CT — A historic store specializing in smoked kielbasa is temporarily closed after being damaged in a fire Monday in Meriden.

Crews responded to the fire around 4:15 p.m. at Filipek's on Elm Street in Meriden, according to WTNH News 8.

WTNH reported the building was significantly damaged in the fire.

Officials told NBC Connecticut that the fire appears to have started near the store’s smoker box, and flames made it into the attic.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Filipek’s, which has been in business since 1905, will be temporarily closed as a result of the fire, the owners announced in a post on Facebook.

“WE HAD A FIRE…..,” the post reads. “First, no one was hurt…

“Thank goodness….

“And, second thanks to the Meriden Fire Department for their quick response.

“We Are Grateful.

“We are also temporarily closed…. but we will reopen just as soon as possible and we will be better than ever.

“We lost our building but not our spirit and we still have the original recipe.”

Filipek's kielbasa has been a” tradition for generations of families,” according to a post on its website.

“Our family owned and operated store front has the home like feel and the smell of smoked kielbasa permeates the neighborhood,” the post reads. “We hope you and your family can enjoy what many have enjoyed and will enjoy for years to come.”
