Man Shot in Chest after Altercation Outside of Meriden Bar: Police

The shooting took place Saturday at about 1:30 a.m. on West Main Street.

MERIDEN, CT — A 33-year-old man was shot once in the chest early Saturday following an altercation at the Sunset Café, located at 278 West Main St. in Meriden, according to police.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was transported to an area trauma unit where he underwent surgery for his injuries. His current medical status was not immediately known.

Police said the shooting occurred just after 1:30 a.m. "[The] Investigation has since revealed that some type of confrontation started inside of the bar," police wrote in a statement. "At some point both the victim and the suspect exited the bar and at that time a handgun was displayed and the victim was shot one time. The shooting occurred outside of the bar and detectives are working to obtain further information."

The shooting remains under investigation, but Meriden police added that they "would like to stress that this was an isolated incident which resulted after a confrontation between the victim and the suspect. It should be noted that this was not a result of any type of gang violence nor was this a random act of violence."
