Man Dies After Being Shot, Struck By Vehicle In Meriden

A man was shot and struck by a vehicle in Meriden Wednesday night.

MERIDEN, CT — A man was killed after being shot and struck by a vehicle in Meriden Wednesday night. Police said they responded to a shots-fired call at 7:40 p.m. in area of Crown and Olive streets.

Officers found the victim had been shot several times and appeared to be suffering from other injuries. Witnesses told officers that the victim had been shot and struck by a vehicle.

The victim was transported to Midstate Medical Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The victim was Sammy Richard Ortiz, 24, of Meriden.

Police said that preliminary investigation found that a dark-colored sedan had approached Ortiz and struck him from behind. Gun fire was heard and witnesses advised that the vehicle fled the area heading east on Olive Street. There appeared to be two men in the vehicle.

Police said in a statement: "We extend our deepest condolences to the Ortiz family during this difficult time and pledge our commitment to bringing this case to a successful conclusion."
