Meriden Green Receives National Recognition: Report

The Meriden Green was recently renovated at a cost of $14 million.

MERIDEN, CT — The recently redeveloped Meriden Green has been recognized by The Architect's Newspaper as one of America's "newest and grandest" public spaces.

The 14-acre space, which was renovated by the city for about $14 million, was named one of six of the nation's best public spaces, a list that includes sites in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.

"Cities looking to repurpose defunct mall sites can take a pointer or two from a city in Connecticut," wrote author Selina Cheah. "In Meriden, a town halfway between New Haven and Hartford, city leaders transformed a former mall and brownfield site into a resilient 14.4-acre park complete with pedestrian bridges, an amphitheater, a remediated landscape with a flood-control pond, and drivable turf for food trucks and farmers markets."
