Meriden Police to Host Free AAA Driving Improvement Class

Experienced New Haven County motorists may lower their auto insurance costs while improving their driving skills when they enroll in a June AAA’s Driver Improvement Program class, hosted by the Meriden Police Department.

Scheduled for June 7 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the department’s 50 West Main Street headquarters, the class teaches the basics of defensive driving and provides current driving practice updates.

Classes are free to AAA members and $20 for non-members. To register online, visit www.aaa.com/driverimprovement.

“Our program is aimed at drivers with several years of experience, who wish to improve or refresh their driving skills,” explains Fran Mayko, AAA’s Driving Improvement Program coordinator. “But there’s an even greater benefit to taking class if you’re over 60: you qualify for a discount of up to 5% on your auto insurance.”

Motorists should be aware, however, the discount doesn’t apply to uninsured motorist coverage, rental reimbursements and towing and labor costs. To obtain discount, a driver must present their insurance company with a completion certificate from a state-approved class. Some companies provide a discount to drivers aged 55 and older, but Mayko suggests motorists check with their individual carriers to determine age requirements and discount amounts.

People who complete the AAA training will receive the certificate at the conclusion of the class. AAA Southern New England is a not-for-profit auto club with 50 offices in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, providing more than 3.5 million local AAA members with travel, insurance, finance and auto-related services. In Connecticut, the Connecticut has more than a half-million members Litchfield, Fairfield, and New Haven Counties.
