Meriden Police Want More Resources To Fight Gun Violence

The police department is requesting neighborhood initiative officers to combat a recent uptick in violence.

MERIDEN, CT - The city council is debating the merits of a police proposal to add Neighborhood Initiative (NI) Unit officers to prevent violent crime, according to the Meriden Record-Journal. Police Chief Jeffery Cossette requested $200,000 to restore five NI positions.

Some on the council agreed with Cossette, but others said the expense would not be necessary.

The NI officers were previously reassigned to patrol to save money. Cossette said that assigning these officers to the areas of the city with the highest call volume, such as the Cook Avenue area, would help as they have better connections to the community.
