Meriden Seeks $20 Million Federal Grant for Housing, Downtown Improvements

The Meriden Housing Authority is applying for the funds.

Meriden, CT - The city's housing authority is wrapping up an application for a $20 million federal grant to help replace the Mills Memorial apartment complex and improve the downtown area.

The Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant is part of a federal Department of Housing and Urban Development program to help urban communities.

In addition to replacing the Mills Memorial complex, the grant would be used for streetscape improvements, a new preschool, job opportunities and other efforts, reports the Meriden Record-Journal.

Officials from close to a dozen city departments are working on the application with the Meriden Housing Authority. Communities throughout the country are in competition for HUD grant funds.
