Jay Agli, 17, gave his own life saving his 19-year-old sister from drowning in the Connecticut River.

MERIDEN, CT - A Meriden teen who lost his life while saving his sister was honored posthumously Monday morning, according to a WTNH report. Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty presented Jay Agli's mother, Jessica Agli, with the Carnegie Hero Fund Recognition Citation and Bronze Medal at a ceremony.

Police said at the time of the 2017 incident that Agli, 17, jumped into the Connecticut River to save his 19-year-old sister, and both were swept away by the current. State police said she was knocked off a sand bar at Haddam Meadows State Park into water that was over her head and was taken by the current.

"Jay did exactly what heroes did... He literally gave his life to save his sister's," said Esty.
