Meriden Woman Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Car While Crossing Street In Wallingford: Police

The woman was hospitalized with "very serious" injuries on Wednesday night, according to police.

WALLINGFORD, CT — A Meriden woman was hospitalized with “very serious” injuries after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the street Wednesday night in Wallingford, according to police. The woman, who has been identified as Michelle M. Scott, 35, was transported to Yale New Haven hospital for treatment. She was being treated for multiple fractures of her right leg, right arm, and skull as of late Wednesday night.

The accident occurred at about 9 p.m. on Center Street at its intersection with South Orchard Street, according to Lt. Anthony DeMaio. (To sign up for Meriden breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

DeMaio said the investigation, which is ongoing, revealed that the operator of a gray-colored 2002 Hyundai Elantra, identified as 19-year-old Thomas Simmons Jr., of Wallingford, was traveling westbound on Center Street when the vehicle struck Scott while she was attempting to walk across the roadway.

Scott was struck within the westbound travel lane in close proximity to a marked pedestrian crosswalk, according to DeMaio.

“The roadway in the area of this collision is a slight downgrade, well-lit and straight, with numerous nearby businesses,” DeMaio said in a press release. “Weather conditions at the time of this incident were warm and humid with good visibility.”

Vehicular traffic was affected as the heavily traveled section of the roadway was closed for several hours to allow the Wallingford Police Department Traffic Division to reconstruct the collision, DeMaio said.
