MidState Medical Center Doctor Receives CHA Award

The award celebrates & recognizes the invaluable contributions of exceptional healthcare workers, both to their field and to the community.

From Hartford HealthCare: The Connecticut Hospital Association recognized Dr. Howard Boey as a recipient of their 2019 Healthcare Hero Award at CHA’s 101st Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 20. The award celebrates and recognizes the invaluable contributions of exceptional healthcare workers, both to their field and to the community at large.

Dr. Boey is a board-certified otolaryngologist who specializes in robotic surgery and head and neck cancers at MidState Medical Center. In the last 15 years, he has traveled to Ecuador annually, bringing specialized surgeries to patients in impoverished and remote locations. The patients he serves are children and adults who lack access to basic medical services.

In Riobamba, Ecuador, which is hours by car from the country’s capital, Dr. Boey primarily performs surgeries on children with deformities such as cleft lip or palate. He travels with a contingency of colleagues from across the country that he’s assembled over the years, including general surgeons, anesthesiologists, and women’s health specialists.

“Dr. Boey is an integral part of the fiber of MidState Medical Center,” said Gary Havican, president of MidState Medical Center. “We are proud to share him and his gift with communities halfway across the globe in an effort to bring exceptional care to patients who need it most.”

Dr. Boey brings his strict medical standards to Ecuador by maintaining a focus on quality in the clinic. Best practices related to infection rates, sterilizing equipment, laparoscopic surgeries, and endoscopic procedures are utilized.

Boey also serves as the president of the medical staff at MidState Medical Center.
