Dr. Joyce L. (Weaver) Groth, 82, of Meriden, loving wife of Dr. Richard H. Groth, died peacefully, Sunday, December 24, 2017 at Meriden Center.
Joyce was born in Meriden, February 3, 1935, a daughter of the late Lester W. and Florence M. (Bower) Weaver, and had been a lifelong Meriden resident. She graduated from Meriden High School, and received her B.S. degree from the Teachers College of Connecticut, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in analytical chemistry from the University of Connecticut.

Joyce was the first female graduate of the Teachers College of Connecticut to earn a Ph.D. in Chemistry. After postdoctoral research at Wesleyan University, Joyce was employed at the University of Connecticut – Waterbury Branch, Platt High School, the University of Hartford, Central Connecticut State University, and for many years at New Britain High School.
Joyce traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, and was active as a figure skater and for many years as a judge for the United States Figure Skating Association. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.

In addition to her husband Richard, she is survived by her two daughters Dr. Eileen Groth Lyon and her husband Dr. Gordon W. Lyon of Hamburg, NY and Kathleen J. Wozniak of Madison; five grandchildren Emily K. Wozniak, James W. Lyon, Elizabeth A. Wozniak, Rebecca M. Wozniak, and Rachael B. Wozniak; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Corinne L. DeLancey and her niece Sheila Hamelin.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wednesday, December 27, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. A funeral service will begin at 7 p.m. Interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to a charity of one’s choice.
