Police Identify Pedestrian Struck By Car In Meriden: UPDATE
The driver struck a utility pole after hitting the pedestrian and power was out for about an hour while repairs were made.

MERIDEN, CT — In an update, Meriden Police have identified the pedestrian who was struck by a car late Monday night a Fernando Ortiz, 21, of Meriden. Ortiz was hospitalized and listed in stable condition as of Tuesday night, according to police.
The crash occurred at about 11:35 p.m. in the area of Hanover Road and New Hanover Road when the operator of a Dodge Stratus veered off the road to the right and struck Ortiz, who was walking along the shoulder of the road in the northbound lane, according to police.
After striking Ortiz, the vehicle continued and struck a telephone pole and caused extensive damage to the vehicle and the pole. Eversource Electric had to “de-energize the area so the vehicle could be removed and damage to the pole repaired,” according to police. Power was out for about an hour.

The driver of the vehicle, 29-year-old Bryan Richard of Meriden, was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said. Ortiz was taken to Hartford Hospital.
The crash remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Stanley Zajac at 203-630-6201.
