The incident occurred Thursday morning on Nancy Lane near North Colony Road. One suspect has been arrested.

Updated at 3:43 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2016: Meriden police are investigating an armed abduction and attempted robbery that was thwarted by a detective sergeant on his way to work Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:52 a.m. as the sergeant was driving into work on Nancy Lane near North Colony Road. At that time, he saw two black males "exit an SUV which had what appeared to be police style lights activated," according to Sgt. Darrin McKay.

The men had had stopped another vehicle on Nancy Lane, and after approaching the other car, the two men grabbed an unnamed woman out of the car and forcibly placed her in the back seat of her own vehicle and then drove off in it with her in the back. The SUV which the two men had exited then began to follow behind the victim’s car.

"Our detective sergeant was calling the incident in to our dispatch center for assistance and the male suspects began to drive off at a high rate of speed," wrote McKay in a statement. "By the time additional officers arrived in the area, the victim’s car was out of sight; however, the SUV was stopped a short distance away from the abduction site and the lone female operator was taken into custody."

The female suspect from from the SUV has been identified as Chasity Marquez, 26, of Prospect Street in Naugatuck. She has been charged with:

Police swarmed the vicinity, actively searching for the victim's car, when the department received a call that a woman was "on the ground crying and visibly upset [about] a mile or two away from the abduction site." She was confirmed to be the victim of the abduction and other than being visibly shaken up and upset, she was unharmed.

She told police that one of the men who abducted her was armed with a handgun.

Meriden dispatch sent out an alert for the victim's car to area towns (they now had a full description of the vehicle and license plate), and the vehicle was found abandoned in a commuter parking lot by Cheshire police in that community.

The car has since been impounded as part of the investigation.

Police, with a Cheshire K-9 officer, searched the area around the commuter lot but the suspects were not found.

"At this time the entire matter is still under investigation; however, it appears that this was not a random act of violence," said McKay. "It is believed at this time that robbery was the apparent motive for the crime but once again, this is still under investigation."
