Retired Meriden Police Officer Charged with Worker's Comp Fraud

The officer said he had injured his knee on the job, but an investigation allegedly revealed he hurt it outside of work.

A retired Meriden Police officer has been charged with worker’s compensation fraud after he allegedly failed to disclose circumstances surrounding a knee injury.

Leighton Gibbs, 54, of Meriden collected more than $34,000 in disability benefits, according to the Division of Criminal Justice.

Gibbs reported a knee injury sustained while working on March 13, 2011. Further investigation revealed that he sustained the injury outside of work the previous day. He retired from the department in 2012.

Workers compensation fraud is punishable by a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
