UPDATE: Meriden Students Involved in Bus Accident to Be Released From the Hospital Tuesday Evening

The 34 students on the bus were sent to the hospital for treatment of injuries or evaluation.

Update 8 p.m.: A total of 34 students and four adult chaperones from Meriden had to receive treatment at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center following the Tuesday morning crash of their school bus while traveling in Glastonbury.

The injured received treatment for whiplash and bumps and bruises.

Hospital spokesman Robert Fraleigh said, “There were 34 students who were 10- and 11-years-old and four adult chaperones for a total of 38, who were treated and released in good condition.”

Update 4:15 p.m. Meriden School Superintendent Mark Benigni said all 34 students will be released from the hospital Tuesday evening. He said thankfully the accident wasn’t worse but the students were shaken up somewhat, the Meriden Record Journal reports.

Update 1:30 p.m.: Students from John Barry School in Meriden were injured in a school bus accident in Glastonbury Tuesday.

The bus was carrying about 33 children plus six adults.

Students were on their way to the Connecticut Audubon Center for a field trip when a tri-axle dump truck rear-ended the school bus on Main Street near Route 17, according to state police.The school bus was stopped at a traffic light when the accident occurred.

The incident was reported shortly after 10:30 a.m.

Six children were transported by ambulance to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center after they said they were in pain, police said.

All other children were brought to the same hospital by another school bus for evaluation after the school’s principal requested it.

Glastonbury Volunteer Ambulance, Aetna Ambulance Center Inc. and Ambulance Service of Manchester sent EMS vehicles to the scene, according to the Hartford Courant.

State police are handling the crash investigation, which remains open.
