Socialize Securely
Twitter introduced new security to their login. This post provides steps to secure your social media experience.

Yesterday Twitter introduced a two step verification process when logging into your account. This comes after some very well publicized (and some not so well publicized) account hacks. I strongly encourage you to enable the two step verification process if you are in fact on Twitter.
What is a two step verification process you ask? Simply stated it means when you log in to your account with your username and password you will be asked for a second form of verification. In Twitter's case it will be via text message. You can enable this feature under the account settings. You will first have to set up your account with a cell phone number which they will have you verify. All in all the set up process is fairly straight forward.
Facebook and Google have had the two step verification process in place for a while now, both of which I personally use. I consider myself to be pretty savvy when it comes to internet security but you can never be too safe. If your account has ever been hacked and/or you are concerned about being hacked (as you should be) you will definitely want to enable all of the security features you can to protect yourself.
Beyond that here are some other tips to socializing on the internet securely:
- Don't share passwords with anyone, even if you get what looks like an email with a link to the site asking you to update your information. This is called Phishing
- Don't use the same passwords across multiple sites. If a hacker gets your credentials for one site you can bet they will try other sites with the same credentials
- Don't accept friend requests from people you are already friends with on the same site, accounts are cloned and made to look like a friends account to gain your trust.
- Don't click on images that you are tagged in if they have nothing to do with you.
- Do use complicated passwords that include upper case, lower case, numbers and symbols. They should not include dictionary words, names or birthdays.
- Avoid logging into anything when on a public wi-fi network.
- If it looks too good to be true, it probably is so don't click on it. Using images and other links a key-logger can be installed on your computer and then track every key stroke you make.
- If you are hacked, report it to the site owner/security.
