13-Year-Old Middletown Resident Plays the Blues: A Patch Performers Presentation

Cole Morson is a blues guitarist and also plays three other instruments.

At age 11, Cole Morson of Middletown had the blues — as in blues music, on his iPod. He listened to the likes of John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson and Elmore James.

Now 13, Cole has played guitar for the past three years and is starting to sing. But that’s not all. He plays double bass in his school’s jazz band, the bass guitar and drums.

“His true passion is guitar though,” father Alvin Morson told Patch.

The biggest challenges are finding local players and venues to perform in, Cole’s father said.

Cole credits Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, and John Mayer as his favorite musical inspirations. He greatly appreciates his mentors, Steve Piper and Gerry Moss, who have mentored Cole since he walked into his first Blues Jam in June of 2014.
