In an announcement made Tuesday, February 26 by Dr. Steven Minkler, dean of Academic Affairs, English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at Middlesex Community College will not be offered through the College starting fall 2013. Current classes will continue through the end of the spring semester.
There are currently 29 students enrolled in ESL courses this semester. All spring 2013 ESL courses that were offered at MxCC’s Meriden Center were canceled due to low enrollment.
ESL faculty will be advising current ESL students during the transition process, so many ESL students will be able to continue their studies at MxCC this fall. Current ESL students will be placed into appropriate MxCC reading and writing classes for fall 2013. To support students with this transition, a "summer bridge" course for current ESL level three and four is being considered. ESL tutoring will be offered in the fall semester to support students during this transition.

“College representatives will be meeting with literacy volunteers and both the Middletown and Meriden Adult Education to strengthen community partnerships on behalf of our ESL students,” said Dr. Anna Wasescha, president of MxCC. “All three programs offer ESL courses for free. This significantly reduces the cost of a two-year degree for college students and reduces duplicate programs that are offered throughout the community.”
The full-time employee teaching ESL is covered by the 2011 SEBAC concession agreement and will continue full-time employment at the College. This employee will be reassigned to teach developmental English. She teaches one developmental class per semester, which will now be expanded to a full load.
