America's Favorite Past Time-Baseball-Begins April 7, 2022

America's favorite Pastime Baseball begins on April 7, 2022.

Why is Baseball America's favorite pastime and how was it created? According to the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s website "...baseball has had a very active role in the shaping of this nation."

The history of Baseball dates back to the 18th Century before the nation was born. According to History.com's article "Who Invented Baseball?" it states "References to games resembling baseball in the United States date back to the 18th century. Its most direct ancestors appear to be two English games: rounders (a children’s game brought to New England by the earliest colonists) and cricket."

By the start of the American Revolution different versions of the game were being played on schoolgrounds and colleges. These variations of baseball '...became even more popular in newly industrialized cities where men sought work in the mid-19th century," according to the same article.

By September 1845 a group of men from New York City created the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club. One of its members Alexander Joy Cartwright “...would codify a new set of rules that would form the basis for modern baseball, calling for a diamond-shaped infield, foul lines and the three-strike rule. He also abolished the dangerous practice of tagging runners by throwing balls at them," from History.com. His changes to America's pastime made the game "...faster-paced and more challenging while clearly differentiating it from older games like cricket. In 1846, the Knickerbockers played the first official game of baseball against a team of cricket players, beginning a new, uniquely American tradition," according to History.com
