Christopher Columbus Statue Vandalized in Middletown: Report

The recent defacing of the statue has drawn the ire of some in the city's Italian-American community.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Christopher Columbus statute at Harbor Park in Middletown was recently vandalized and it has drawn the ire of some in the city’s Italian-American community, according to the Middletown Press.

The Press reports that the word “discoverer” inscribed on the statue was crossed out with a black Sharpie and replaced with “looter” while the words “murderer,” “rapist” and “genocidal” were written on other sides of the statute.

The city’s Columbus Quincentenniel Committee raised more than $50,000 in 1992 to commission the monument and gave it to the city, according to the Press.
