2 Firefighters Hospitalized After Battling Blaze In Middletown

The firefighters suffered burns while battling a two-alarm fire involving two houses Wednesday afternoon in Middletown, officials said.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — Two firefighters were hospitalized after suffering burns while battling a two-alarm fire in Middletown on Wednesday, according to officials.

Crews were at the scene on Clinton Avenue in the area of Grand Street around 1:30 p.m.

Middletown police advised motorists to avoid the area and said the fire department was "working two active house fires in the area of Clinton Ave."

The Middletown Press reported that the fire had spread from a two-family home at 15 Clinton Avenue to 9 Clinton Avenue. All residents got out of the 15 Clinton Avenue home safely, and nobody was home at 9 Clinton Avenue, according to the Press.

In an update late Wednesday night, officials said the Middletown Fire Marshals Office along with Connecticut State Police have been investigating the two-alarm fire throughout the night. It remains under investigation.

“One Lieutenant was transported to Bridgeport Hospital with burns to his leg and one firefighter was transported to Middlesex with burns to his neck,” officials wrote in a post on the City of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073 union's Facebook page. “We are glad to say that both our members were released from the hospital and home with their families tonight.

“We would like to thank our mutual aid partners that operated on scene and provided the City with coverage. Also a special thanks to Hunters Ambulance and Middlesex Medic for the care of our members.”

Middletown received mutual aid from the following departments: Cromwell, Meriden, Middlefield, New Britain, Portland, South District and Westfield.
