Why We Celebrate Palm Sunday?

Happy Palm Sunday, April 10, 2022!

What is Palm Sunday and why do Christians celebrate it?

Palm Sunday is also referred as "Passion Sunday." It marks the "triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, an event that took place the week before the Lord's death and resurrection," according to the article "What Is Palm Sunday?" from the "LearnReligions.com website." Also, it is the beginning of Holy Week which ends on Easter Sunday.

Jesus Christ was on his way to Jerusalem and he knew this journey there would be his last which would result "in his sacrificial death on the cross for the sins of all mankind," according to the same article. He sent two disciples ahead of him to the community of Bethphage "to look for an unbroken colt." Jesus said to them "Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' say, 'The Lord needs it.'" (Luke 19:29-31,NIV) The two disciples returned to Jesus with the colt. Jesus rode the animal to Jerusalem to mark his "humble entrance into Jerusalem." The people in the village greeted Jesus Christ enthusiastically "...waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches: The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" (Matthew 21:9, NIV)

Hosana means "Save Now" and the palms the huge crowd were waving "...symbolized goodness and victory. Interestingly, at the end of the Bible, people will wave palm branches once again to praise and honor Jesus Christ...." There was a huge gathering of people greeting Jesus "...from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. (Revelation7:9, NIV). These people were there because they hoped Jesus would overthrow Rome according to the same article. "They recognized him as the promised Messiah from Zechariah 9:9." The people their honoring Jesus did not completely comprehend Jesus Christ's mission. Their sacrifice honored God. Following this celebration Jesus Christ made his "journey to the cross."
