
in 1908 Clarence Wadsworth built the Long Hill Estate in Middletown. Much of the Estate was open farmland which had belonged to generations of the prominent Hubbard family.
The original location for the house was on the crest of Long Hill, its access roads, and the layout of the immediate mansion grounds. After determining that the hilltop was too windy, Wadsworth selected a new location for the house down the west slope where it currently stands today. The Colonel died in 1941, bequeathing the Estate to the Rockfall Corporation, a philanthropic, non-profit organization he established in 1935, devoted to the establishment and preservation of woodlands, wild lands, and open space.

The Estate has miles of hiking trails on the land which is opened to the public:
