History Uncovered Behind Wall in Durham
A small piece of Middletown's past was found in a wall at Durham Market this week.
Durham Market Manager Bob Mounts and his co-workers were in for a big surprise when some basic handiwork turned into a historical discovery Thursday.
Behind the walls workers found an old tin box filled with paperwork from John C. Otte and Perley S. Morse, who operated the store when it was called "Morse and Otte Country Grocery Store." An umbrella with a wodden handle as well as several large checkbooks were also discovered in the walls.
Hand-written receipts, bills, records, statements, letters and other Middletown documents are dated between 1936 and 1939. Glass cookie tins were also in the walls with "National Biscuit Company" engraved in the metal base. The National Biscuit Company officially became known as Nabisco in 1971.
