Middletown Considers Closing Elementary School
Faced with potential cuts in municipal and state aid, the Middletown Board of Education is considering the possibility of closing a school.
MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Middletown Board of Education will discuss appointing a committee to determine the long-term effects of closing an elementary school at its June 14 meeting, according to the Middletown Press.
Faced with potential cuts in municipal and state aid, the Press reports the school board is considering closing either Macdonough or Spencer elementary school for the 2017-18 school year.
While the district is projected to save $650,000 to $670,000 by closing one school, it also runs the risk of creating a racial imbalance, according to the Middletown Press.

Superintendent of Schools Patricia Charles said at Tuesday night’s board of education meeting that she is not proposing to close a school for the 2016-17 school year, according to the Press.
