Middletown To Host Free Document Shredding Event

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Residents can safely dispose of sensitive documents during a free paper shredding event Saturday, Aug. 1, at Palmer Field.

The event will run from 9 to 11 a.m. at Palmer Field, 49 Bernie O'Rourke Drive. Households are limited to three boxes of paper for shredding.

City officials said professional shredding helps protect personal information while allowing paper to be recycled more efficiently than documents shredded at home. Industrial shredding equipment produces recyclable material that can be baled and sent directly to paper mills, reducing the need for new wood pulp and lowering energy use, water consumption and air pollution associated with paper production.

The shredding event is part of a series of regional recycling programs coordinated by the River Council of Governments from April through October.

The city also reminded residents that household hazardous waste collection sites are available in East Hampton, Westbrook, Middlefield and Chester. All collection dates and locations are open to residents throughout the region.
