Middletown K-9 Tracks Down Man Accused of Assaulting Girlfriend: Police

MIDDLETOWN, CT — K-9 Hunter tracked down a man accused of assaulting his girlfriend using an article of clothing that was previously worn by the suspect, according to police.

Police said the suspect was found lying in a thick brush area, hiding from officers.

Police responded to the south side of town early Sunday morning, Aug. 7, on the report of a domestic dispute.

The victim told police that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend and that he also forced his way into her apartment during the incident.

The suspect fled the area on foot prior to police arrival, according to police.

A track was conducted with K-9 Hunter using an article of clothing previously worn by the suspect.

“While walking back to the start point, K9 Hunter suddenly begin to show interest in the track,” police said in a post on the K-9 Unit’s Facebook page. “His body language changed completely and he began a hard four-legged pull across backyards to the 900 block of Saybrook Road. There, up a steep overgrown grass embankment alongside the road, K9 Hunter located the suspect lying in a thick brush area, hiding from police.”

The suspect was cooperative and with the assistance of the backup officer, he was taken into custody without incident, police said.

“Time spent on the track was approximately 45 minutes with a total distance of about 2 miles in warm humid conditions,” police said. “The majority of it being on a pavement surface in a residential area.

“The K9 Team did a great job being persistent in this track. K9 Hunter fought through the harsh weather conditions, leading the officers to the suspect, resulting in a felony apprehension.”
