UPDATE: Man Found Dead at Correctional Institution Identified

Philip Richardson, 55, of Middletown was found dead in his cell Monday morning. His death is under investigation.

UPDATE: The 55-year-old Middletown man found dead of an apparent suicide Monday at Cheshire Correctional Institution has been identified as Philip Richardson.

A 55-year-old Middletown man was found dead in his cell at Cheshire Correctional Institution Monday morning, the victim of an apparent suicide.

At about 11 a.m. Monday, the inmate, whose name was not released, was found alone in his cell with a piece of a bed sheet tied around his neck. The other end of the sheet was tied to a bar in the window of his cell.

Corrections and medical staff worked on the man and then transported him to Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington, where he was pronounced dead at 11:40 a.m.

The man was serving an 18-year sentence for first-degree manslaughter. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. 

The Department of Correction Security Division and Connecticut State Police are investigating the death.
