Middletown Swing Bridge Rehab Project Targeted For 2028

MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Connecticut Department of Transportation has released details on a project to rehabilitate the Middletown-Portland Railroad Bridge over the Connecticut River in Middletown and Portland.

Officially, the work is State Project No. 0082-0317.

"The project purpose is to rehabilitate the Middletown Swing Bridge to provide a safe and reliable freight rail crossing while maintaining navigation on the Connecticut River," CT DOT officials said.

The project, officials said, is needed to address the bridge's overall condition, including replacing deteriorated fender systems, addressing scour vulnerability, increasing structural capacity, and rehabilitating and/or replacing mechanical and electrical systems nearing the end of their reliable service lives.

"This rehabilitation will increase the bridge's load capacity and modernize its mechanical and electric systems to provide reliable operation," CT DOT officials said.

Right-of-way impacts are not anticipated, CT DOT officials said.

Construction is expected to start fall 2028, depending on funding and permits. The estimated cost is $87 million, with state and federal funds paying the bill.
