MIDDLETOWN, CT — Middletown Public Schools teachers returned Monday for the district's annual convocation as educators prepared to welcome students for the new school year. The event was staged at the Santo Fragilio Performing Arts Center at Middletown High School and marked the first convocation led by Middletown's new Superintendent of Schools, Joseph Macary. The remainder of the district's staff will return Wednesday for a second convocation ahead of the start of classes Thursday, Aug. 26. The district said teachers are eager to welcome students back for the 2026-27 school year.

The 44th Annual WICC Surfside Hotel <a href="https://www.bluefishtournament.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Greatest Bluefish Tournament on Earth</a> returns to Long Island Sound on Saturday, August 29, with fishing officially beginning at 12:01 a.m. Anglers from Connecticut and New York will compete for bragging rights—and a $25,000 grand prize awarded to the tournament's largest bluefish.
The weekend-long tournament features more than $40,000 in total cash prizes, including:
<ul>
 <li>1st Place: $25,000</li>
 <li>2nd Place: $7,500</li>
 <li>3rd Place: $2,500</li>
 <li>Smaller cash prizes awarded through 20th Place</li>
 <li>Port Prizes awarded for the heaviest bluefish weighed at each official Connecticut and New York weigh station (see below for complete list of weigh stations)</li>
</ul>
Young anglers, 17 and under, will also have the chance to win big. The tournament will award a $1,000 cash prize to the largest bluefish caught by a youth angler. Second and third place youth winners will receive $100 gift cards.

Families looking for an extra year to help their child build confidence and prepare for kindergarten have a new option at the Northern Middlesex YMCA.
Enrollment is now open for the Y&rsquo;s Kindergarten Preparatory Academy (KPA), a transition program designed for children who are 4&frac12; years old and born between September 2021 and March 2022.
The program follows the same curriculum as the Middletown Public Schools KPA program, while offering smaller teacher-to-child ratios and more individualized attention. Through a supportive, engaging environment, children have opportunities to strengthen the social, emotional and developmental skills that can help them enter kindergarten ready to learn and thrive.
The YMCA&rsquo;s KPA offers full-day care from 7:15 a.m.&ndash;5:15 p.m., making the program a convenient option for working families as well.
