The city's best Prof. Gallitto Basketball fourth- and fifth-grade players wrangled the title in the final seconds of the finals game against Pawtucket, R.I., Hoops

The Middletown Cardinals, sixth- and seventh-grade Prof. Gallitto All-Stars matched up against the New Britain Boys Club at 1:30 p.m. and won by 12 points. Middletown dominated throughout.

The most exciting basketball game in the state today was played between 10-year-olds Sunday in Middletown. The championship match — ultimately won at the buzzer by Middletown — was such a nail-biter it had Wesleyan University President Michael Roth on his feet cheering in the stands at Woodrow Wilson.

The Middletown Bombers pulled off a win Sunday against the Pawtucket, R.I., Hoops, 42-40 in the final seconds of the game. It was a Cinderella story as the fourth- and fifth-grade Bombers went from 33-35 with two minutes left in the game to 40-40 with 21.8 seconds remaining, when #2 Ezra drove in the winning basket.

Xavier High School faced off against Glastonbury High School at 2:30 p.m.

Even Wesleyan University President Michael Roth turned up to cheer on the Middletown Bombers.

The Middletown fourth-and fifth-grade beginning basketball Bombers won Saturday's All-Star game against St. Joe's of Worcester, Mass., at Keigwin and will face off against the all-star players Pawtucket, R.I., Hoops middle schools Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Woodrow Wilson Middle School in the 2012 Prof. Gallitto Invitational Tournament.

Earlier in the day, the Bombers played Southington's best fourth- and fifth-graders — an excellent team that took Middletown to the last seconds of the game to defeat by one point. The Middletown Jets faced off against Hamden at 11 a.m. as the young Hamden athletes claimed a victory.
