Mom Arrested After Leaving Child, 4, Alone in Car: Middletown Police

The woman told police she had an appointment at the Middlesex Medical Center and wasn't sure if she was allowed to bring the child inside.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — A Hartford woman was arrested after police say she left her 4-year-old daughter alone in a car for about 30-45 minutes while she was at the Middlesex Medical Center for an appointment.

Police responded to the parking lot at 540 Saybrook Road last Thursday morning (Oct. 6) after a witness reported seeing a young child locked in a vehicle unsupervised.

The mother, Shakimia Johnson, told police that she had an appointment for a drug test at 9 a.m. and wasn’t sure if she could bring her daughter inside with her, according to the police report.

Johnson’s appointment took longer than she expected and when she attempted to check on her daughter, she was informed that she couldn’t leave the building due to the nature of the appointment, according to the report.

Police said the child was in the vehicle unsupervised for about 30 to 45 minutes.

Johnson, 26, was charged with leaving a child under 12 years old unsupervised in a motor vehicle. She was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond and is due in court on Oct. 20.
