Naomi Judd and “Treatment-Resistant Depression”

Expert Says There Are Always Options

The suicide of country music star Naomi Judd has left many upset and confused. In interviews through the years, Judd said she had a diagnosis of “treatment-resistant depression.” This week “Conversations on Health Care” discusses depression with Tom Coderre, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Coderre explains to hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter that SAMHSA wants everyone to understand that treatment and supports are available, that no one should lose hope and that there are always options. Coderre also explains the many ways he and his colleagues work to fulfill SAMHSA’s mission to reduce the impact of substance use disorder and mental illness on America's communities.
