Obituary: Burton Carl Johnson, 83, of Middletown

Burton retired a Master Sergeant from serving our country in 1985. He served in the Air Force, Army Reserve and the Army for 30 years.

Burton Carl Johnson, 83, of Middletown, formerly of Higganum, husband of Christine (Ringer) Johnson of Cromwell, died Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at his home.

He was born December 30, 1932 in Middletown, son of the late Alfred and Gladys (Rich) Johnson. Burton retired a Master Sergeant from serving our country in 1985. He served in the Air Force, Army Reserve and the Army for 30 years.

Besides working with the military, he worked at Atlantic Cement Co. in Portland and Ulbrich Wire in Wallingford. In his younger years, Burton enjoyed hunting, fishing, and getting together with friends. He was a longtime member of the Haddam Horseshoe League and Setback League. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter Deborah Mathre of Newington, son Carl Johnson and his wife Sheila (Walczak) of Haddam, two grandchildren, Anthony Mathre of CT and Lee Mathre of NC. He was predeceased by his brother Warren Johnson.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday November17, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Dr., PO Box 5022, Wallingford, CT 06492, the “Hearts United” Cat Rescue, P.O. Box 731, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
