Obituary: Carmelo Ernesto Zimmitti, 79, of Middletown

Carmelo passed away with his loving family by his side after a brief illness.

Carmelo Ernesto Zimmitti, 79, of Middletown, passed away on October 13, 2016 with his loving family by his side after a brief illness.

Carmelo was born on June 17, 1937 in Melilli Sicily. He was the son of Adelaide Amandorla and Salvatore R. Zimmitti.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years Alfia (Effie) Marino Zimmitti. Besides his wife Effie, Carl leaves behind his four children, Adele Rosa (Carmelo), Marian Carrillo (Oscar), Salvatore R. Zimmitti, Frank Zimmitti (Carrie) and his beloved grandchildren who called him “Nonno”, Allegra Rosa, Carmelo J. Rosa III, Diego Carrillo, Mario Carrillo, Amalia Zimmitti and Matteo Zimmitti.

Carmelo also leaves behind four siblings, Nella Mazzotta of Catania, Italy, Elvira Catalano (Attilio) of Middletown, CT., Giuseppe Zimmitti (Anna) of Melilli, Sicily and Ella Dering of Lancaster, PA. and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was pre-deceased by nephew David Catalano.

Carl emigrated from Italy in 1960 and soon after helped established “Rosario Zimmitti & Sons Mason Contractors” and later was the sole proprietor of “Zimmitti Masonry, Inc.” for many years until 1981, when he joined the Bricklayers & Allied Craftsman Local Connecticut Masons.

Mr. Zimmitti was a member of St. Sebastian’s Church, and the Italian Society, Inc. of Middletown since 1960. In his younger years Carmelo enjoyed soccer, running, bowling and car racing. Upon retirement, Carmelo became an avid gardener and also enjoyed summer car trips to Atlantic City, New Jersey with his wife Effie.

Carmelo was extremely proud of his Sicilian heritage and instilled these values in his loving family.
