PD: Man High on Herbal Incense Fled Crash Scene

Middletown Police tracked a 21-year-old Silver Street resident to his home, where he and the passenger involved in a car crash, they say, admitted to smoking Head Trip.

A city man, who say admitted to smoking an herbal marijuana substitute, causing a car accident and fleeing the scene, is facing DUI charges.

On April 3 at 10:04 p.m., Thomas W. Freeman, 21, of Silver Street, driving a Honda Accord, was involved in an accident on Route 9 South at Exit 16 and left the scene. The owner of the car that was hit reported the accident to police, the report says, with a plate number.

Freeman was found at home with the damaged car along with the passenger, the report says. He told police the other driver hit his car on Hartford Avenue, while, police say, he was staggering.

He and the passenger, who couldn’t stand up, the report says, smoked a herb called Head Trip [herbal incense also known as K2], which “made him feel crazy.” Freeman told officers he hadn’t drank liquor but failed the sobriety test, the report says. Officers took two urine samples from him.

He was charged with failure to obey a traffic signal and driving while under the influence of drugs.
