“Russell Library offers free WiFi hotspots for Middletown students”

Middletown, CT: Students who need broadband internet at home have an opportunity to get connected. Russell Library has received 50 wireless hotspots to distribute to unconnected households for educational purposes. Service will be provided free of charge through June 30, 2022.

Funding was provided by the federal Emergency Connectivity Fund to help close the homework gap. “When the Emergency Connectivity Fund was announced, we knew it could help bridge Middletown’s digital divide.” says Ramona Burkey, Russell Library’s Director. “Our mission statement says ‘we empower people to grow, connect, strive, and thrive.’ These hotspots tick those boxes for students in our community.”

Additional connectivity could not come at a better time. More contagious COVID variants have emerged, creating staffing shortages and family quarantines. The internet is a lifeline for students struggling to keep up with school. Households that lack access are at a distinct disadvantage in comparison with their connected peers. “Russell Library is doing all we can to support young learners,” Burkey says. “We are partners in their educational success.”

Hotspots will be distributed as available in order of application, limited to one hotspot per household.
