School Board Decides Against Closing School in Middletown: Report
The Middletown Board of Education had considered closing an elementary school.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Middletown Board of Education unanimously voted against closing an elementary school for the 2017-18 school year, according to the Hartford Courant.
The school board had considered closing either Macdonough or Spencer elementary school for budget savings, but parents overwhelmingly spoke in favor of keeping the schools open at a recent meeting. They argued that the impact on families would outweigh the projected $500,000 savings, depending on which school was closed, according to the Courant.
A committee was appointed earlier this year after Superintendent Patricia Charles wanted to study the possibility due to declining enrollment trends and potential cuts in municipal and state aid.
