Pecausett Pond Cleared In 90 Minutes!
In spite of a heavy, late afternoon downpour, 41 volunteers with 7 canoes and many kayaks showed up at 5 p.m. on August 17 to save Pecausett Pond in Portland from a serious water chestnut infestation. Everyone seemed to enjoy the beauty of the creek and pond as well as the camaraderie of the large group. Photos of the event can be viewed here.

Reduce Carbon Emissions and Save Money
To take advantage of the state-sponsored and subsidized Home Energy Solutions program, visit EnergizeCT or call 877-947-3873. HES includes basic services to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. Residents who install home solar are now required to receive HES, so this service is now in high demand with longer wait times. Now is the time to take action.

Beauty In The Balance
Wesleyan students Idenya Bala-Mehta, Angelina Reddy and Giovanna Vitale produced an excellent 8-minute film for the Rockfall Foundation on the impacts of invasive plants and animals. The project came out of Sadia Quraeshi Shepard’s course, Introduction to Collaborative Documentary Filmmaking. Watch it here.

Make Compost, Not More Landfills
Our state’s solid waste problem is critical. Here is an excellent video on why and how to get your food scraps out of the waste stream. Kitchen To Garden – Connecticut’s Composting Video.

For more information, including some Middletown-specific details, here is an excellent article by Jonah Center President Krishna Winston, “Why should we compost, and how do we go about it?”

Source to Sea Clean-up
The Jonah Center is partnering with engineering company VHB to clean up Middletown’s River Road area on Saturday, September 24, 9 a.m. - 12 noon. This is part of the Connecticut River Conservancy's Source to Sea cleanup event taking place at other Middletown locations and elsewhere along the Connecticut River. We need volunteers to spend some time with us that morning removing trash along River Road and from parts of the shoreline accessible from land. Reply to this message with the words “Sept 24 cleanup” to register and receive more details such as where to show up, parking, what to bring, necessary footwear, and weather-related postponement. Thank you, in advance, for pitching in!

Spring Street Bike Lane Painted
Neighborhood children and volunteers painted the westbound bike lane in front of Macdonough School, a project organized and executed by the Free Center. This “street art” project resulted from advocacy by the Jonah Center and the Complete Streets Committee to make most of Spring Street one-way to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists and to reduce cut-through traffic that was harming the neighborhood.
