Tax Decrease Approved In Middletown Budget

MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Middletown Common Council recently approved a $210.8 million budget that decreases taxes for fiscal year 2020-21, according to the Middletown Press.

The Press reports the approved budget reduces spending by 0.33 percent and reallocates $200,000 from the police department’s private-duty line item to a soon-to-be-formed committee on anti-racism. The tax rate was approved at 35.8 mills.

Mayor Ben Florsheim presented a budget in late April that kept the tax rate flat at 36.0 mills, and he said was the first "true zero-increase budget in a generation."

The Board of Education’s request was fully funded and the arts budget was reduced by $80,330 because the circus program was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
