MIDDLETOWN, CT — An 18-year-old Middletown resident accused of fatally stabbing his mother has been found not competent to stand trial and was ordered this week to the state’s mental illness hospital, according to the Middletown Press.

Police found that Vela stabbed the victim in the vehicle while they were in the area of Ridgewood Road, then got out of the vehicle and ran away, Hubbs said. The victim was able to drive to the fire department where they died from their injuries, according to Hubbs.

Officers found Vela on Ridgewood Road and he was taken into custody. He sustained minor injuries during the incident and was taken to the hospital for treatment, Hubbs said at the time.

Hubbs said police found the weapon that Vela used for the attack and also determined that there were two active protective orders between Vela and the victim. Police didn’t release the victim’s name.

Family members have identified the victim to Hearst Connecticut Media as Alicia Medina, a 53-year-old mother of six and grandmother of seven.
